Flexibility, improved efficiency and space saving - Mya 4

Dr Hu can now use multiple tubes and flasks to efficiently run several experiments at once, which has already saved her a lot of time and energy.

The Situation

Dr Hu Bo’s experiments in Food Chemistry were previously run using multiple hotplates. As she needed cooling as well, hotplates were not very convenient for her experiments.

What’s more, her experiments require the use of different enzymes, so sometimes she needed to do many separate experiments, which was inefficient and cost her a lot of time.

The Objective

Dr Hu wanted a very flexible instrument which would save primarily on time, but also on fume cupboard space, and to offer both magnetic and overhead stirring. The instrument needed be able to handle a wide range of volumes, and to offer both heating and cooling.

The next step for Dr Hu’s lab is to automate additions and use pH control, so they needed a system which could be evolved in that way in the future.

The goal was also to have an instrument which could be quickly and easily used by the whole department at any time.

The Results

The Mya 4 Reaction Station met the researchers’ application needs in many ways. They required space saving, wide volume range – from a few mls to hundreds of mls – and the option of overhead stirring. Automation was important to Dr Hu, as well as the potential to upgrade to further automation in the future. She can now use multiple tubes and flasks to efficiently run several experiments at once, which has already saved her a lot of time and energy.

"We can do both heating and cooling on only one unit, and we can use it to control four blocks and 16 tubes at one time, this is very useful for us."
